SIZES
Shopify image sizes
Square product images should be 2048 × 2048 px. Shopify accepts anything up to 5000 × 5000 px and 20 MB — but the number that actually costs you money is file weight, not dimensions.

Every dimension, in one table
| Image | Desktop | Mobile | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product image | 2048 × 2048 px | same file, scaled | 1:1 |
| Hero / slideshow | 1280 × 720 px | 360 × 200 px | 16:9 |
| Website banner | 1200 × 400 px | 360 × 120 px | 3:1 |
| Logo | 100 × 100 px | — | 1:1 |
| Favicon | 48 × 48 px | — | 1:1 |
2048 px square is the figure to remember for products. It is what Shopify itself recommends, and it is the smallest size at which the zoom-on-hover behaviour still looks sharp on a high-density screen. Going bigger does not make it sharper; it only makes the page heavier.
The hard limits
- Maximum 5000 × 5000 px, or 25 megapixels.
- Maximum 20 MB per file. You should never come close.
- Formats accepted: PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, SVG, HEIC, PSD, TIFF, BMP — including animated GIF and WebP.
The limits are generous enough that almost nobody hits them. The constraint that actually bites is speed.
The number that matters more than dimensions
Aim for around 300 KB per product image. Shopify's own guidance puts a general page image at roughly 500 KB and warns that anything approaching 20 MB will visibly damage load times.
A 2048 × 2048 PNG straight out of an editor can easily be 4–6 MB. The same image as an 80%-quality JPEG or WebP is usually 200–400 KB and indistinguishable to a shopper. WebP is the better default if your workflow supports it.
This is not a pedantic point. Product pages are where the money is, and image weight is usually the largest single thing slowing them down.
Consistency beats precision
One thing matters more than hitting any exact number: every main product image should share the same aspect ratio.
Mixed ratios are what produce the ragged collection grids you see on unfinished stores — one product tall, the next wide, the row heights fighting each other. Shopify will pad or crop to fit, and neither result is what you intended.

What breaks when you get it wrong
- Too small — zoom looks soft, and on a retina display the whole image looks slightly out of focus.
- Too heavy — slow product pages, worse Core Web Vitals, and a measurable drop in conversion on mobile.
- Mixed ratios — uneven collection grids and unpredictable cropping.
- Transparent PNG where you wanted white — transparency renders as whatever the theme's background is, which is not always white.
A workable default
If you want one rule rather than a table: 2048 × 2048, JPEG or WebP at around 80% quality, under 400 KB, same ratio on every product. That is correct for the overwhelming majority of stores, and it is the setting to use unless you have a specific reason not to.
Generating images at these sizes
Worth stating plainly, since it is the reason this page exists: LAZY60 generates listing images from a single product photo, and its 2K output is 2048 px — exactly Shopify's recommended product image size. Aspect ratio is selectable per image, so a set can be produced at a consistent 1:1 for products and 16:9 or 3:1 for banners without resizing anything afterwards.
A phone photo is enough to start from, as long as the product is in focus and fully visible. If you are still deciding whether to commission a shoot at all, we wrote up what product photography actually costs first.
Common questions
What size should Shopify product images be?
2048 × 2048 px, square. That is Shopify's own recommendation and the size at which hover-zoom stays sharp. Keep the file itself around 300 KB.
Is PNG or JPEG better for Shopify?
JPEG for photographs, PNG only when you genuinely need transparency, and WebP over either if your workflow supports it. A 2048 px PNG photograph is often ten times the size of the equivalent JPEG with no visible difference to a shopper.
How do I make all my product images the same size?
Decide on one aspect ratio — 1:1 is the safe default — and crop or pad every main image to it before upload. Shopify will not do this for you consistently, and mixed ratios are the most common cause of uneven collection grids.
What is the maximum image size Shopify allows?
5000 × 5000 px, or 25 megapixels, and 20 MB per file. These are ceilings, not targets — uploading anywhere near them will slow your product pages down badly.
